Up for auction is this
Cartersville, Illinois, Charter #7889, $20.00 1929 Type-1 Small Size
National, Fr. #1802-1, with treasury signatures of Edward E. Jones as
Register of the Treasury and Walter O. Woods as Treasurer of The United
States. The cashier of this bank is Mike Ferrell and the President
of the bank is F.M. Hiller.
This bank chartered on
August 10, 1905. The bank issued only 6,378 small size Nationals,
from 1929 thru October 10, 1931 when the bank went into voluntary
liquidation. Cartersville, Illinois was a one National Bank town. This bank failed early into the small size issuing period. When a bank failed, the other National Banks in
the area would make a concerted effort to redeem the notes from the failed bank
and get them off the market! This is a very strong reason along with the very low issue from
this bank, that notes from this bank will always be scarce!
The note has four full
even margins, both obverse and reverse. There is light dirt on both sides of
the note. I do not see any rips,
tears, or splits in this note, just good honest wear. There are 4 micro pinholes spread out over
the note, that I can barely see when I hold it to sunlight. I would grade this note as a solid Fine/Very Fine. Please look at
the scans carefully and judge the grade and quality of this note for
yourself. The Kelly Census shows
12 small size notes reported on this bank. There are 5 - $10.00 Type-1’s and 7 - $20.00
Type-1’s on this Type – 1 only bank. There were also 3 - $5.00 notes, Types 1 & 2
listed in the census, but these are bogus reports, as the bank never issued
$5.00 banknotes at any time during its existence, nor did it last long enough
to possibly issue Type – 2’s! This note is new to the census, the new owner
can report it if they so choose.
This note would make a
fine addition to any Illinois State banknote collection. The bank
was located in Williamson County. This note should appeal to those collecting that County and its
surrounding areas. The very low issue
make the note appealing to many collectors. Don’t let this note get away!
