Nice and clean, sharply Embossed with the Massachusetts Colonial “Pine Tree” 3 Pence Tax Stamp at lower left. Paper-covered wax Seal at the top left. Docketed at verso. This court document is a writ commanding the Sheriff of Essex County to attach the goods or estate of “John Downer of Newbury in our county aforesaid Joyner” to the value of Eight Pounds, and to “safely keep, so that you have him before Our Justices… to be holden at Salem… on the Second Tuesday of July next...” due to Downer’s failure to pay a promissory note. On the blank verso, Deputy Sheriff Joseph Willot adds his signed statement, which reads: "I attached a table of the within named John Downer, and at the same time left a summons at the reside place of his above."
