On some earlier BMW models you may need a reset tool to show that the cartridge has been refilled. These can be purchased online at AliExpress.com
Up to two fragrance cartridges can be installed into the air freshener inside the glove compartment. The fragrances and their level of intensity can be controlled in line with the driver's preferences using the iDrive controller.
BMW Main Dealers can supply refill cartridges(containing only approx. 10ml each) for between £25 to £30 inc. postage and packing.
The BMW owners Forum suggest that these cartridges will last on average (assuming only 1 hour's driving per day) for:-
Level 1 : 4 - 6 months usage
Level 2 : 3 - 4 months usage
Level 3 : 2-3 months usage.
Each OEM cartridge weighs 65 grams and contains only approximately 10ml of fragrance oil.
Only fragrance oils are to be used in the BMW, Mercedes and Audi air control/ freshener systems.
Water based fragrances will dissipate very quickly are definitely not to be used in these sensitive air-conditioning systems. Some owners have tried using aftershave type fragrances which are also definitely not recommended as these are usually alcohol based.
I have been successfully refilling my own BMW and Mercedes-Benz air freshener cartridges (and with Mercedes-Benz Glass Flaçons) for the last six years. This has been achieved whilst generating considerable cost-savings.
Our refill kit contains 30ml of fragrance oil which can be added at 10ml per refill directly into the absorbent materiel inside the square openings at the back of the cartridge. A nutrient dispensing 5ml disposable syringe is supplied with the kit (please see the photos).

Depending on how much fragrance oil remains in the existing cartridge we recommend that you refill the cartridge at say 5ml to begin with. Leave the cartridge for a few minutes to absorb the first 5ml and then slowly add the second (up to) 5 ml.
NB : The BMW micro-chip counts down the remaining level of fragrance. The counter may not reset itself on refill. Whilst the new fragrance will continue to work the counter may not update itself. A resetting device can be bought on AliExpress.com for approximately £32.72 as a one-off purchase that plugs in via a USB connection.
