Publisher: Paris, L'Imprimerie Royal, Number of pages:   792, 25.5×20 cm complete volume of "Histoire de l'Académie Royale des Sciences: Année MDCCLVII [1757]", profusely illustrated with many interesting articles by prominent French Scientists.

Of particular note is the article by Philippe Buache with his "Observations géographiques et physiques, où l’on donne une idée de l’existence des Terres Antarctiques, et de leur Mer glaciale intérieure.."

This Mémoire includes 2 plates, the first is a map of the South Pole, theorising the lands of Antarctica and their Inner Glacial Sea. Map particularly interesting as it joins “New Zealand” with the proposed Antarctic landmass. 2nd plate is a map of the environs of New Guinea, comparing the new Dutch discoveries to older maps and reports.

Additionally, this volume features a world map which shows the effect that the parallax will produce on the time of the entry and exit of Venus in 1769 by Joseph Jérôme Lefrançois de Lalande.

Quarto (25.5 x 20cm), brown leather binding with gilt title label to spine and gilt decoration on boards, damaged corners. Marbled endpapers, clean with no ownership plates. All edges trimmed, red stained. viii + pp216 (histoire) + pp568 (mémoires), 18 plates (some folded). Tight binding and clean pages.
Chances are that it may have been owned by a library at one point, as there is a very faint purple smudge on each plate (see photographs).
