Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874) was an American artist known for his depictions of the American West during the mid-19th century. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Miller began his artistic training in Paris, France, where he studied with Thomas Couture and Paul Delaroche. He returned to the United States in the mid-1830s and soon embarked on a journey to the Rocky Mountains with William Drummond Stewart, a Scottish aristocrat and avid hunter.

Miller spent several years traveling with Stewart, recording their adventures in sketches and watercolors. His work provided a rare glimpse into the daily lives and customs of the Native American tribes they encountered, as well as the breathtaking landscapes of the West. Miller's paintings and sketches were highly regarded for their authenticity and vividness, and his depictions of the American West helped to shape the popular image of the region during the 19th century.

In addition to his Western art, Miller was also an accomplished portrait painter, and he completed a number of notable portraits of prominent figures of his day. Despite his talent, Miller struggled financially for much of his career and was largely forgotten by the art world after his death. However, his legacy has been rediscovered in recent years, and his works are now highly sought after by collectors and museums alike.
