Entitled "Metalogic" this C. 1970 woodcut is by the celebrated American painter and printmaker Jacob Landau (1917-2001) famous for his dynamic woodcuts of swirling enigmatic figures. Measuring 15" x 21" image, 25 1/2" x 31 1/2" matted it is signed in pencil lower right, titled lower left, and numbered Artist's Proof lower center from a small edition of 50.  .  It is in excellent condition with no holes, tears, stains or toning and matted in archival materials.,  Works by this artist can be found in the collections of many major museums  Including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art. New York; Smithsonian Museum of American Art,  National Gallery of Art, Washington. DC, etc.
Jacob Landau: A twentieth century painter, lithographer, illustrator and designer, Jacob Landau first served with the American Army  before studying at the Philadelphia College of Art, the New School for Social Research, New York, and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris. Though he began his career as a magazine illustrator, by1960 Landau had established himself as a major lithographic and  woodcut artist and created many works for the Associated American Artists, the Pratt Graphic Art Center and the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Jacob Landau also taught at the Philadelphia Museum Art School and served as a director of the design department at the Pratt Institute.
Jacob Landau's work received many prestigious awards and grants, such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, and Guggenheim and Tamarind fellowships. Institutions that today include his prints in their permanent collections are The Library of Congress, Washington, DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York
