A wonderful pitcher.

Circa 1840, this water pitcher is crafted from solid coin silver. The picture is simply marked "D&C" and we are unable to determine the silversmith. It measures 10 5/8 inches to the top of the handle by 8 inches across at the widest point including the handle. It is not marked for metal content though it does test positive for 900/1000 silver and weighs an impressive 855 grams.

The pitcher does suffer from a number of dings, dents, and scratches. The front is personalized "Wheaton" and the pitcher is accompanied with a hand written letter that was found inside of it.

The letter reads:

This pitcher is one of a pair presented to my great uncle when he was retired as a pastor in Christ Church in New Orleans. Before the Church was built he traveled abroad to study architecture. Bishop Brownell was so impressed with Dr. Wheaten's work he called him to Hartford when the cathedral was built there. Miriam Barlow(sp?)

The letter does align with Dr. Nathaniel Sheldon Wheaton experiences. He was the 2nd President of Trinity College in CT until 1831 and went on to accept the Rectorship of Christ Church in New Orleans. You can read more about Dr. Wheaton on Wikipedia and other sites noting his time at Yale.

Overall and outstanding pitcher that will make a perfect addition to a collection of any caliber!
