They can and usually are used as book ends.
The Mark on the bottom indicates these to be Carl Schneider's Heirs Pieces often referred to as "Grafenthal's" because of the location of the factory.
Dates from 1870's so these pieces are quite old.
Number on bottom of each is the Model Reference.
