Offered is a Greek postcard franked with a 3 lepta stamp, 1906 Olympic Games in Athens. The postcard features actress Cléo de Mérode and it was published by Léopold-Émile Reutlinger. The postcard is plate signed by Cléo de Mérode at the bottom and marked “Reutlinger PARIS” on the left sleeve of Cléo de Mérode’s dress (pictured). The 3 lepta stamp is cancelled with an “ΑΘΗΝΑΙ ΚΕΝΤΡΙΚΟΝ” (ATHENS CENTRAL) postmark and dated: “? 06. 10.Π.” (?.1906 10.Π.) (pictured). Hellas catalogue number for the stamp is #191. The card is addressed to the city of Volos, Greece (pictured). Size is 14 cm X 9 cm (5.5 in. X 3.5 in.). The postcard comes from an old Greek collection. Condition is very good with a crease at the top left corner (pictured). The postcard with the cancelled stamp pictured is the one you will receive, so please examine all pictures carefully.

Cléo de Mérode 

Cléopâtre-Diane de Mérode (1875 – 1966) was a French dancer of the Belle Époque. She has been referred to as the "first real celebrity icon" and the "first modern celebrity". She was also the first woman whose photographic image, due in particular to photographers Nadar and Léopold-Émile Reutlinger, was distributed worldwide.

 

Léopold-Émile Reutlinger 

Léopold-Émile Reutlinger (1863 – 1937) was a French photographer who came from a successful German-Jewish family of photographers. His uncle Charles Reutlinger founded the family's photography business, and his father was the photographer Émile Reutlinger. His son Jean Reutlinger was also a prominent photographer.
