 DESCRIPTION:
For sale is this splendid early 20th century hand painted American antique cast iron bullfrog doorstop or paperweight, featuring all original surfaces and first generation enamel paint with no 'in-painting, old or new. The frog measures 1 ¼" height x 3" width x 3" depth and weighs 10.5 oz. It was clearly previously handled and its golden yellow ochre enamel painted underside can be seen along the lower margins of the black painted upper torso and head. There's some minor paint loss, which would be expected of a painted cast iron doorstop or paperweight, now between 100 to 120 years old. It not only has great painted surfaces but also terrific, well articulated and detailed natural form, adeptly capturing the sitting frog, appearing as if ready to leap upwards from its poised, prone squatting position. The frog appears even startling today, in that its naturalist conceptual attitude and dark body coloring with a butterscotch underside, appears other-worldly and an atypically colored amphibian. For those who love and covet figurative hand painted cast iron figures, perhaps this frog will delight you and find its way into your home? Very nice.
