Fanny Elssler (born Franziska Elßler, 1810 – 1884) was an Austrian ballerina of the Romantic period. She was a rival of Marie Taglioni and a contemporary of Fanny Cerrito, Carlotta, Grisi, Lucile Grahn, and Pauline Duvernay. When she danced "La Cachucha" in the ballet LE DIABLE BOITEUX, she became a European sensation. Lithographs and statues of Elssler in this Spanish-style dance were created to celebrate and promote her success.
