Volumes 1-2 (of 4 volumes). 1653 Presso i Bertani (Venice, Italy), 7 x 8 3/4 inches tall vellum bound, two volumes bound as one, with separate title pages and pagination, engraved printers' devices to both title pages, [v.1] [16], 297, [11]; [v.2] [12], 320, [12] pp. Moderate to heavy soiling, creasing, rubbing and edgewear to vellum covers, with a bit of edge chipping to the fore edge of the rear cover. Light ink prior owner name to blank front free-endpaper. Slight dampstaining to fore edge of first few pages, including half title and first title page. Period ink name to either side of engraved printer's device on title page. A handful of page with moderate age toning or marginal staining. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of the first two volumes of this important four-volume history.

Author Galeazzo Priorato (1606-1678), Count of Cozzamo, was born in Venice and had an extremely active life. He started out as a soldier, fighting as a mercenary in Germany, Holland and Italy. He became a diplomat, advisor and historian to Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. When he retired he returned to Venice and became known as a prolific historian.
