Up for sale is this rare antique The Wood Shovel & Tool Company wood split handle shovel. Pat. from 1936. As you can see from the photos there is a repairable split in the wood just above the only rivet on the handle where the handle starts to split off. The wood on the handle is a little loose but still presentable. Obviously, this shovel would be for display purposes. I stained the wood with Sherwin Williams Int./Ext. stain. The wood was very dry and could use another coat. Especially, the top of the handle. The back of the shovel head you can see a hole about the size a little smaller than a dime and 2 very small holes where the metal curves in on each side of the top of the head. Also, a split in the metal on the right side that is 2 in. long. All metal has been cleaned and Fluid Film has been applied. Fluid Film has simply been, by far, the best non-toxic rust and corrosion preventative.
On the front of the shovel it reads “2  Heat Treated  Patent No. 2031556.” Just above the 2 where the metal piece is attached to the wood it reads “The Wood Shovel & Tool Co. Piqua, Ohio.” These words are hard to read. Below that it reads “Pat. No. 2178509.” These numbers are a little easier to read. On the small metal band on the front of the handle it reads “Pat. 1727364-1727333.” I am not sure if there is any letters or numbers on the metal band on the back of the handle. If there is, it isn’t legible.
