A beautifully crafted mid-sized snuff box by Henry Matthews, Birmingham 1900.  Lovely decorative (romantic style) garden scene in repoussé, showing a minstrel playing to two ladies. Good condition for its age, showing the usual minor wear and tear but no significant dents or faults. 

Henry Matthews was a Birmingham based silversmith first registered in 1894. His office was on Vittoria Street, Birmingham in the noted  Jewellery Quarter. Matthews is particularly remembered for his smaller silver items that required great attention to detail. He often worked in repoussé, which is a highly skilled technique that requires pushing a suitably shaped tool into the metal sheet, creating a raised image and design on the front. This is a fine example of that technique.
