MASS AIR FLOW SENSORS (MAF)

The mass air flow sensor (MAF), also known as an air mass meter/sensor or an air flow meter/sensor is found in between the air filter and the engine. The MAF measures the engine’s air intake volume and then relays this information to the ECU so that in conjunction with data from various other sensors, it can then determine how much fuel to inject and when to ignite it.

A failed MAF often results in inconsistent/jerky acceleration, difficulty starting the engine, rough idle and eventually, illumination of the engine management light. This is usually caused by damage and/or corrosion to the hose, sensor probe or housing and it’s advised to check the whole air intake for these problems when following a MAF-related fault code.
