Issue Mary Riter Hamilton: Official First Day Cover
Celebrate
distinguished artist Mary Riter Hamilton with this Official First Day Cover,
which features a detail of her painting Trenches on the Somme (1919).
The stamp is cancelled in her hometown of Teeswater, Ontario.
Commissioned by
the Amputation Club of British Columbia to paint the battlefield landscapes in
France and Belgium, Mary Riter Hamilton was Canada’s first unofficial woman
battlefield artist. Over two and a half years, and in arduous conditions, she
produced more than 300 paintings, drawings and etchings, depicting scenes of
destruction and reconstruction after the First World War.
As part of the issue, 7,000 official first-day covers, each measuring 190 millimeters by 112 millimeters, were serviced with cancels from Teeswater, Ont., where Hamilton was born.
The Oct. 28-dated postmark includes a pictorial cancel featuring an easel.
