La vicenda narrata in queste pagine, finora inedita, ricostruisce il rapporto tra uno dei maggiori architetti del XX secolo e un imprenditore visionario e illuminato. Fu il bolognese Dino Gavina a coinvolgere Carlo Scarpa nella progettazione di mobili in piccola serie e ad affiancargli Sandro Bagnoli, per assisterlo nel portare a compimento i progetti secondo specifiche esigenze di produzione industriale.

Per Scarpa, formatosi all'Accademia di Belle Arti e poi a lungo coinvolto, con altissimi risultati, nel lavoro delle vetrerie di Murano, l'attenzione all'oggetto era connaturata e fu stimolata da questa sfida: un'occasione di ricerca sul piano creativo, tecnico, economico e culturale per progettare quelle architetture “in piccolo”, che sono i mobili da lui realizzati, ed elaborare molteplici idee rimaste in forma di appunto. Il volume analizza nel dettaglio la genesi dei tavoli Sarpi e Florian , della libreria Rialto e del letto Toledo, ancora oggi prodotti, e di altri pezzi rimasti “in bozza” attraverso un'accurata documentazione grafica e saggi di approfondimento, corredati da un Abaco dei mobili progettati da Scarpa ed editati da Simon e da Bernini tra 1968 e 1979

The story narrated in these pages, previously unpublished, reconstructs the relationship between one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century and a visionary and enlightened entrepreneur. It was the Bolognese Dino Gavina who involved Carlo Scarpa in the design of small series furniture and who supported Sandro Bagnoli, to assist him in completing the projects according to specific industrial production needs.

For Scarpa, who trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and then for a long time involved, with very high results, in the work of the Murano glass factories, the attention to the object was innate and was stimulated by this challenge: an opportunity for research on a creative level , technical, economic and cultural to design those “small” architectures, which are the furniture he made, and to elaborate multiple ideas that have remained in the form of a note. The volume analyzes in detail the genesis of the Sarpi and Florian tables, the Rialto bookcase and the Toledo bed, still produced today, and other pieces that have remained "in draft" through an accurate graphic documentation and in-depth essays, accompanied by an Abacus of the furniture designed by Scarpa and edited by Simon and Bernini between 1968 and 1979
