Chloe Preston provided the illustrations for twelve "Peek-A-Boo" books (per Baumgarten); interestingly, this title not listed. A scarce book, as of this writing there is one copy online of "The Peek-A-Boos In Camp", however, no copies of this "Play Book" which is clearly an abridged version of "In Camp" published as a board book for very young children. Our search of OCLC lists only a single copy of this "Play Book" (held by the University of Oxford), and our date comes from that record (which is, itself, "suggested by [a] Bodleian Library copyright stamp").
Information on Chloe Preston (1887-1969) seems a bit elusive; from various online sources we gleen that she was born in Britain "in a gentrified English country environment". Her charming illustrations of the Chunkies (anthropomorphic wooden dolls) and the Peek-a-Boos have "clear simple outlines and bright colours, [and] her humorous images portray simple excursions and activities" (n.b., quotes from the web site of the Antique Print Club).
___DESCRIPTION: Six thick pasteboard pages covered on both sides with glossy paper onto which have been printed the illustrations (taken from "In Camp") and with text at the top and bottom of each page, bound together with three pieces of canvas inserted into tabs cut into the boards; large octavo size (9 3/16" by 8 1/4"), [12] pp.
___CONDITION: Overall better than good, perhaps not quite very good. The binding holding although the canvas strips beginning to wear, the illustrations bright, and free of prior owner markings; some overall wear to the boards most noticeable at the corners and some soiling throughout, the pictures on the front and back boards somewhat rubbed. Even with its faults, a solid copy of a very scarce Preston book.
