 During his commercial apprenticeship, Hendrichs took acting lessons and made his debut in Darmstadt in 1831 - after starting out in the amateur theater. From there he moved to the Stadttheater in Frankfurt / Main. In 1838 he made guest appearances on extensive guest tours and in 1840 was hired to the Royal Theater in Berlin. In 1841/42, however, he broke his contract there because he did not feel sufficiently busy and switched to the Hamburg City Theater. In 1844 he was won back for the Berlin Court Theater, where he remained until his retirement in 1864. He was famous for his numerous guest appearances at home and abroad, so he took part in Dingelstedt's total guest appearances in Munich in 1854.

He was best known for his hero roles. Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer wrote numerous roles for Hendrichs.
