Cathedral of the Nativity and of the bell tower, city of Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, were built in 1836, architect Melnikov.

In 1812, part of the Moldavian Principality was freed Russia from the Turkish yoke. In 1813, the Diocese of Chişinău was open and there was a need to build the cathedral in the center of Chisinau.

A lot of effort for the construction of the cathedral belongs to Archbishop Demetrios.

The Archbishop asked the governor of the Novorossiysk Territory and Bessarabia, the hero of the War of 1812, Count Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov obtain for highest resolution (that is, the emperor) for the construction of the cathedral three-patronal church with a dedication to the main chapel of the Nativity.
