The grebo masks were very early distributed in Paris. They particularly attracted the attention of Picasso, who owned a collection of African masks and who was inspired by a Grebo mask, bought around 1908, to create his famous work Guitar, the first Cubist sculpture, in 1912.
Male masks with geometric shapes are often recognizable by their long nose framed by one, two or more pairs of protuberant tubular eyes, sometimes threatening in appearance. The features of female masks are softer, more harmonious and more serene.
