Vintage Singer
Buttonhole Attachment
SIMANCO 86718
For the Serious Buttonhole Stitcher!
A complete SIMANCO 86718
Buttonhole Attachment set includes the distinct red nylon case, the buttonhole
attachment, feed dog cover plate with its attaching screw, the long attaching screw and instruction manual.
The 4 red adjusting knobs, metal pointers and screws should be in place.
The SIMANCO 86718 red
cased buttonholer followed the manufacture of an earlier adjustable Singer
Buttonhole Attachment SIMANCO 120795 which came in a white and green Singer cardboard
box.
The mechanical structure
of SIMANCO 121795 and SIMANCO 86718 are the same with one exception. SIMANCO
86718 has a “stripper finger” on the toe (black arrow in photo below).
The finger holds the fabric down and in place as the needle lifts.
See it?
Firmly secure the feed dog cover plate to the bed of your sewing machine with the bed screw after making certain there is adequate room for the needle. Raise the needle up to its highest position. |

Bring your Singer buttonhole
attachment in from the back of your sewing machine. Place its fork on the far
right of the needle bar screw where it is the most narrow. Tilt the top of your Singer buttonholer attachment to the right to mount it to the presser bar (angling makes this easier). Apply and tighten the mounting screw. Make sure your buttonholer is firmly secured.
On this buttonhole attachment, you
can adjust the... Adjust the length of the
buttonhole by releasing the smaller red knob at the back of the attachment (far left in
the first photo). A wing nut is used to illustrate this adjustment in the 2nd and 3rd
photos.
~ 2. Space the Stitches
Adjust the stitch spacing using a
screwdriver to move this pointer pictured below. To increase the space, turn the pointer toward the L (Larger). For shorter space turn the pointer toward S
(Smaller). The stitch space adjustment can be
made ADJUSTING the stitch spacing means you can adapt to the thinness or thickness of the material you are stitching a buttonhole on. From chiffon to heavy wool AND adapt to the type of thread used to stitch the buttonhole. From fine silk to top stitching buttonhole twist.
ADJUST the cutting space by releasing this red knob/wing nut pictured below and tightening it firmly in its new position. To the right towards N for narrow. To the left towards W for
wider cutting space.
NOTE: If you change from size to
different size buttonhole, thin to thicker thread and fabric to different
weight fabric, you may have to ADJUST the cutting space again. Too little cutting space and the
center cut will cut the buttonhole threads (See top left red buttonhole
pictured below).
4. BIGHT This is the width of the zigzag or
side to side stitch in the two long columns. ADJUST the BIGHT by
releasing and moving this red knob/wing nut pictured below. Right towards N for a narrow BIGHT. Left towards W for a wider BIGHT.
Hopefully, you are no longer
intimidated by this beautifully complex buttonhole making instrument. Maybe
you are nodding your head having experienced this wonderful Singer device. Pictured below (center) is a
common learning goof. Always start every buttonhole
with the feeding foot in the farthest forward position. (Farthest forward or
back is where the bar tack is created). Move the feeding foot forward by rotating this large red knob/wing nut clockwise (seen on the right in the photo). It will turn easily. If you miss the most forward position, just continue to rotate until it comes back to where you want it.
