Fine and rare antique 18th century french master violin made by Victor Clermont in Nancy circa 1770.

Fine antique french violin of the 18th century made in Nancy by Victor Clermont.

The top is made of two pieces of spruce, and shows very regular grain lines. The back is made of two pieces of wonderfully flamed maple, the curl descending from the left to the right. The ribs and head are of the same wood. The fine varnish is of an golden-brown color. The head has been very artistically grafted on a new neck at the middle of 20th century by Albert Claudot in Dijon. He also made a splendid ebony crown for the button. The bridge also has been changed by him, and bears his fire brand.

The violin is in a fine condition. There is a sound post repair which has been so nicely made by Albert Claudot that it is almost invisible. The instrument has been entirely revised and set-up in our workshop, including a set of Thomastik Dominant strings and new tailpiece and chinrest. The pegs are dating from the Albert Claudot time.

The violin is a wonder of the french 18th century school, with a lot of character which makes the instruments made by Clermont very recognizable.
