Brett Whiteley was one of Australia's most intense and prolific artists. This book, first published in 1979 and revised in 1988, provides the reader with a general summary of his work and tells in an unusual way the story of his life, which is also the story of his art. 'Both grow into one.'

The text is immensely readable. Sandra McGrath, has been closely associated with the Whiteley far 1965, and this has given her a uni opportunity to note the changing insig a great artist. The paintings themselves indicate the results of those insights.

Sandra McGrath has also presented many intimate sidelights of the painter's character and work. She has done this by allowing him to tell his own story, quoting excerpts from his diaries, from informal conversations and taped interviews.
