One of the biggest misconceptions of old iron beds is that all cone shape iron rails are
the same. When these beds were made around 100 to 150 years ago, there
was no industry standard for bed rail connection systems. Each
manufacturer made their own rails to fit only their beds. While many
appear similar some may have subtle differences.(the differences cause a mis-fit and can even cause a broken rail or connection if force (steel hammer) is applied to the connection, we have seen hundreds of beds and rails broken because of this pressure , in our bed rail business we sometime recommend a short bed rail sample to determine the correct rail type if there is a question with a fit, this insures a good fitting rail with no costly rail return. you can order rails samples here ebay listing here copy and paste in search box

When Installing a bed
rail on an iron bed NEVER USE A HAMMER. A hammer can break the bed hitch
or the bed rail.Sometimes the hitch can have a accumulation of rust
preventing it from seating correctly, use a tubing wire brush to clean
all these connections, We use a rubber mallet to install bed rails.
Sometimes a steel hammer is necessary but only to Remove or Uninstall
the bed rail (from the bottom only (never to install rail )
