BACKSTORY:
So if you ever visited my eBay shop you might know I aim to make unique prints. Not only in the way I make them, but the print designs themselves. What aids me in designing unique pieces is focusing on things that are hard to come by. In other words, there isn't a billion places already selling it. More importantly, what aids me, and I can't stress this enough, things that have a hardcore fan base but for one reason or another you just can't find tangible items for them. With that said, a lot of research goes into coming up with an idea for a design. Oddly enough, the idea for this Tatu print hit me when I was researching an entirely different design idea. The idea for this print was based on the simple fact I feel that t.A.T.u. never really got their roses, especially in the U.S. They were way more successful in other countries, yes. However, I'm not referring to their records sales or hit songs. I'm referring to at a time before smartphones and social media, this duo used their platform to showcase to the world love between the same sex. See, during the time they exploded in the U.S. everything was already REALLY extreme on television. With all the crazy reality shows and prank shows like Jackass. Two girls loving each other wasn't really a big deal. However, if you calm everything down in that era and think about the Supreme Court only just a few years ago ruling in favor of same-sex marriage in the U.S. Along with all the LGBTQ movements of the 90s and back and social media presence in the last 5-8 years which aided in that ruling. You can see how t.A.T.u. were pretty "ballsy" in the way they presented themselves to the world at that time, and could go as far to say they were OGs of the movement since the early 2000s. A great display of their presentation is their performance during the MTV Movie Awards in 2003. Which again kinda washes away in the era that was the 2000s. BUT put into modern context with everything we've seen with social justice in the last decade, it hits a little different. So I took all that into consideration when I went to design the print. I wanted to keep it simple, but have it have some strength. So I got my hands on a photo of Lena and Julia embracing in the nude and decided the most simple way was to use my Polaroid style print with that. The photo itself does most of the work. And once I added the handwritten style song lyric/tittle "they're not gonna get us" with a hart and a tag, the strength was there, and it was done.
