This is a vintage washing board from Shanxi, a province in northern China, west of Beijing. It is a fairly weathered washboard carved from a solid block of hardwood. It features a hand painted elephant at one end and floral designs at the other. A wonderful decorative piece full of rustic charm, also can be used as an interesting serving tray. About 22" x 7" x 7/8".

Signs of wear, with the wood grain visible through the paint. Many surface cracks are starting to form at the ridges. Parts of the wood have chipped off, especially at the corners. Lots of character with the wood striations, and toned areas along with the paintings done in a primitive style. Hardwood is fairly heavy (about 3 lbs) with a solid feel.
