I have photographed it on my Full size poster bed.

There is a center panel which is 32", and a seam on each side.

There are two side panels which are  38.5" each.

Given the seams I believe this is the other orientation.

Bed size???

I think it depends on your personal preference, the climate and overnight room temperature, if there is additional bedding, bed occupancy, size of occupants, their sleeping habit (restless and still sleepers), and design expectations.

I personally hate when a blanket hangs below a bedspread, and covers a portion of the bed skirt.

I have photographed it on my Full size 4 poster bed. Mattress size 75" length by 54" width - it is swimming. There are nearly 27" overhangs on each side.

A Queen size mattress would be 80" length by 60" width, so the overhangs would be 24"+

A Cal King bed mattress would be 84" height by 72 width, leaving 18" overhangs. 

An Eastern king bed mattress would be 80" length by 76" width. It adequately covers the bed, with 16" overhangs
