The American LaFrance Aero Chief Aerial Platform Fire Truck was introduced in 1962 and continued in production until 1974. 171 Aero Chief platforms were built. It came in three sizes: 70’, 80’, and 90’. It was designed by John B. Pierce. The Aero Chief had a unique articulated boom that could extend up to 90 feet and rotate 360 degrees with a basket at the end of the boom that could accommodate up to four firefighters. It was one of the first fire trucks to use a hydraulic system to operate the boom, instead of cables and pulleys. And it was also one of the first fire trucks to have a computerized stabilizer system that automatically leveled the truck and prevented it from tipping over.
The AMT Ertl 1/25 Code Red American LaFrance Aero Chief Aerial Platform Fire Truck Plastic Model Kit #31639 is based on the original blueprints from the American LaFrance factory and is the most authentic 1:25 scale kit available. The kit features a detailed chassis, engine, cab, boom, basket, and decals for different fire departments. The kit is over 20 inches long when assembled, and the boom can extend to over 3 feet.
