MARIAUJO1 is the artistic name of Maria Emília Araújo, a renowned Portuguese modernist ceramic artist and painter specialized in large hand-painted tile murals and wall hanging tile paintings. Her vibrant work is influenced by the rich culture of her native country and by the various places she has lived, including Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Curacao and Caracas.

Since the 60s, panels and paintings on tile have  become her main artistic expression and have earned the respect of a demanding public hungry for contemporary art of high quality. Her unique creations use European paints manufactured with modern technology that ensure resistance to sun and rain and prevent colors from fading. The high standard of vitrification applied to all tiles significantly reduces scratches and imperfections.

MARIAUJO1 studied at the Escola D’Artes Decorativas-Porto and at Escola Antonio Arroyo-Lisbon. She has received several prizes and, besides Portugal, has exhibited at the prestigious Kiln Club of Washington DC twice, Faenza-Italy, Mar Del Plata-Argentina, Caracas, France, Spain and Rio de Janeiro. Her large panels have been commissioned for public spaces (squares, Government buildings and airports), foundations, condominiums, hotels and private homes.

In the year 2000, at a ceremony attended by Mario Soares, then Prime Minister of Portugal, MARIAUJO1 inaugurated her huge panel in homage to the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil. This amazing work measures 3m x 8,4m (10 x 27ft) and permanently adorns a prominent wall at the Tom Jobim International Airport in Rio de Janeiro.

MARIAUJO1 live and works in Viúva Lamego Factory in Lisbon.
