Planter’s “Mister Peanuts”

                  Route 1, Peabody, MA

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Planters Peanut Company was established in 1906 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The Mister Peanut character, with very few revisions, was born in 1916 and was a very popular advertising icon. He made an appearance in both the 1939 and 1960 World Fairs. In the 1950s and 1960s, he was featured in many television ads. In 1997, he stood in center ring as ringmaster on a circus float for Planters in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. There is conflicting information about a funeral for Mr. Peanut during an ad during the Super Bowl in 2020. It seems there was a funeral and Baby Nut was born and grew into Mr. Peanut, Jr. Today, in spite of his funeral at age 104, Mr. Peanut is alive and well and we still love him.

Planters opened hundreds of retail stores in the 1930s and 1940s. By 1960, there were stores in more than 200 cities in the United States. In 1961, Planters was acquired by Standard Brands which closed or sold all its retail stores and eventually sold to Kraft Heinz Foods which in turn sold to Hormel, the company which owns Planters today.

The Mr. Peanut painted in this picture stood in front of the Planter’s store on Route 1 North in Peabody, Massachusetts. He continued to stand, falling into serious health problems until 1988 when Planters Peanuts headquarters in Fort Smith, Arkansas had him shipped there to be brought back t

William. B. MacGregor Jr. Watercolors the Junkyard Artist

William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self-taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May,2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA
