Cholla wood is excellent to use in fish aquariums, as it has many benefits for both the animals and the water quality. Some of the benefits are:
- Cholla wood provides a natural shelter and hiding place for fish, shrimp, crabs, snails, and other aquatic creatures.
- Cholla wood is thorn-free and has soft edges, so it is safe to add to most tanks and aquariums without harming your pets. It also has a unique shape and texture that adds an artistic touch to your aquarium or terrarium.
- Cholla wood is porous and can absorb water, which makes it an ideal material for biological filtration. It can host beneficial bacteria that help to break down organic waste and improve the water quality. It can also help to stabilize the pH level in your tank by releasing tannins that lower the acidity.
- Cholla wood is organic and untreated, so it does not contain any harmful chemicals or additives that could leach into the water.
- Cholla wood is a natural food source for some aquatic animals, such as shrimp, crabs, snails, and fish. They can graze on the biofilm and algae that will grow on the cholla wood, or nibble on the wood itself. This can provide them with essential nutrients and minerals.
As you can see, cholla wood is good to use in fish aquariums for many reasons. However, before you add cholla wood to your tank, you should prepare it properly by following these steps:
- Boil the cholla wood in de-chlorinated water for 10-15 minutes.
- Rinse the cholla wood thoroughly with clean water to remove any dirt or debris.
- Soak the cholla wood in de-chlorinated water for 24 to 48 hours to remove any excess tannins that might discolor the water, and until the cholla wood does not float.
- Place the cholla wood in your tank and enjoy!
Cholla wood is the remnant of a cholla cactus after it dies. Cholla cactus wood has a lot of holes and is usually hollow in the middle, which is perfect for use in aquariums and for mounting air plants (tillandsia). We like the ‘desert patina’ that cholla develops as it ages, and so we only roughly clean our cholla (brushes, air pressure, and water), and do not treat our wood with any preservatives or chemicals. We leave it to you to finish the piece to suit your needs. Each piece of wood is different in texture, shape, pattern, and color.
These 3 pieces of cholla are each about 6” in length & 1” in diameter, and all 3 weigh 2.2 ounces.
Because the weight less that 8 ounces, shipping is very reasonable. We package very carefully, and usually ship the day we receive the order (except on weekends and holidays). We accept returns.
If you have any questions about these pieces, please send me an Ebay message.
A word about the photos, while the images are pretty accurate and true, they still might be a little off.
BTW, we are now including a FREE gift with cholla orders, our way of saying thanks.
