BRITTEN'S OLD CLOCKS & WATCHES AND THEIR MAKERS.

Revised and Enlarged by Cecil Clutton

Edited by Cecil Clutton, G.H. Baillie & C.A. Ilbert

A traditionally bound, hardback book, (the ninth edition) published by Bloomsbury Books, London. This edition contains has a list of 25,000 makers and has been revised and extended, with 388 illustrations, 40 of them in colour.

Britten begins his book with a brief explanation of time and its measurement to the year 1550 and this puts the remainder of the book into context for those who know very little. Chapter two covers the next hundred years and the decorations used and subsequent chapters track the development of clocks and watches over the centuries.

The first appendix is entitled 'Records of famous makers', thirty pages of wonderful insightful information on some of the most inspired of clock and watchmakers. The second appendix is an alphabetic list of about 2,500 surnames, followed by given names and often a date(s) and a little information on each of these clock or watchmakers. The third and final appendix contains hallmarks and marks which may be found on clocks and watches. There are lists of hallmarks from London 1678 - 1914; Edinburgh 1705-1977; Birmingham 1773-1914 and Chester 1701- 1914.

These pages are then followed by a Glossary of technical terms, a select bibliography and an index. A book packed with information and interestingly written.

A fine cloth copy in a slightly edge-nicked and dust-dulled dust wrapper. Remains well-preserved overall.
