MANIFOLD PRESSURE SENSORS (MAP)

Also known as a barometric, vacuum, absolute pressure or simply pressure sensor, the manifold pressure sensor (MAP) is usually located on the intake manifold or nearby and connected to it via a vacuum line. Its job is to measure the air pressure inside the air intake manifold and then send this data to the ECU so that it can calculate the air density and air flow rate in the engine which in-turn, allows it to accurately determine the required fuel metering for optimum combustion.

A failed MAP sensor leads to general poor engine operation such as stalling, stuttering, rough idle, hesitant acceleration and misfiring. This is often caused by corrosion, heat damage from the engine, loose wires, general damage due to vibration or the vacuum hose becoming damaged/clogged.
