2023 PDS American Women Quarters - Maria Tallchief  - 3 COINS SET - UNC - US Mint

The American Women Quarters honor a diverse group of notable American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.

Maria Tallchief broke barriers as a dancer and a Native American exhibiting strength and resilience both on and off the stage. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a ballerina. Her role as the “Sugar Plum Fairy” in The Nutcracker was pivotal in the ballet’s success in America.

The reverse coin design depicts Maria Tallchief spotlit in balletic pose, and her Osage name, which translates to “Two Standards,” written in Osage orthography. Additional inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “MARIA TALLCHIEF.”

The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2023.”
