The Goon Show

180 Old Time Radio Shows

The Goon Show was a British radio show that started in 1951 and ran until 1960. It changed the face of British comedy and still maintains its influence to this day!

The Goons included Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe. They burst onto the radio with surreal storylines, absurd logic, puns, catchphrases and groundbreaking sound effects. They ridiculed the pomposity of those in authority and laughed at the stupidity of mankind.

Characters such as Ned Seagoon, Eccles, Bluebottle, Major Bloodnok, Minnie Bannister, Henry Crun, Grytpype-Thynne and Moriarty all helped to create an alternative and ludicrous view of the world.

Few comedies from the UK have endured so well. Episodes are still repeated around the world and the BBC continues to release them on CD. So if you are an old time fan or a Goon Show novice, hopefully this site will allow your enjoyment to continue.

Beyond Our Ken (1958–1964) was a radio comedy programme, the predecessor to Round the Horne (1965–1968).
Both programmes starred Kenneth Horne, Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick, Betty Marsden and Bill Pertwee, with announcer Douglas Smith.
Musical accompaniment was provided by the BBC Revue Orchestra.
The name is a pun on Kenneth Horne's name and the (now mainly Scots/Scottish English) word ken, meaning 'knowledge or perception'.

The first edition of Beyond Our Ken was broadcast on 1 July, 1958. Series 1 ran for 21 episodes plus a Christmas special.
The scripts were written by Eric Merriman and Barry Took.

The Malcolm Mitchell Trio was replaced by the Fraser Hayes Four from the 17th episode.
The producer was Jacques Brown, except for episodes 20 and 21 which were produced by Charles Maxwell.

Dad's Army is a British sitcom about the Home Guard during the Second World War.
It was written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft and broadcast on BBC television between 1968 and 1977.
The series regularly had audiences of some 18 million viewers in it's television days and is still repeated world wide today..

The Home Guard consisted of local volunteers otherwise not elegible for military service, usually owing to age, and so the series

Arnold Ridley and John Laurie.

Relative youngsters in the regular cast were Ian Lavender, Clive Dunn (who was made-up to play the elderly Jones),
Frank Williams, James Beck and Colin Bean.
