ISAMU NOGUCHI'S FAMOUS 1944 CHESS DESIGN -- NEW EDITION FROM THE NOGUCHI FOUNDATION

ISAMU NOGUCHI

One of the great leaders of the new art and design of the 20th century, Isamu Noguchi lived a life of constant creation and discovery. In his lifetime, Noguchi reimagined almost every aspect of mankind's place in nature, technology, history, modernism, East and West.

Noguchi's chess design was revealed at the Imagery of Chess exhibit in New York City, 1944-45.
It was made of red and green translucent Plexiglas (a.k.a., Lucite), an entirely new material at that time.
Along with it, ten Noguchi design chess tables were made (one recently sold at auction for over $300,000).

Although the original set only existed for that one showing, the set was remade for the Noguchi Foundation by chess artist Larry List in 2008, each set complete with a Noguchi design chess table (selling for $25,000 per set and more later at auction).

In 2023, the Noguchi Foundation once again called upon Larry List to develop a new edition of the Noguchi chess set (this one).
In place of the special Noguchi table, this set has a board, using the design of Noguchi's chess table top.
It is generous in size, with a four inch tall king, very close to Noguchi's original 4 3/8 inch king.
The folding board is 21¼ inches wide.
This new edition is available, beginning in 2023 at $590 per set (expected to increase in subsequent years).
It is also sold in the gift shop of MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), New York.

This set is authorized by the Noguchi Foundation, developed by Larry List, produced by AMEICO Inc.
