ANTIQUE CARTRIDGE CASE

A lovely example of a beautifully made mid Victorian leather cartridge case fitted with five separated sections and straps for lifting the contents. It was supplied by Henry Jackson, gun, rifle & pistol manufacturer of 32 Pride Hill, Shrewsbury. It comes with the strap pictured and also the key for the lock.

It has interesting and traceable provenance and came from the finest Elizabethan manor house in Shropshire: Condover Hall (near Shrewsbury - note the proximity to Henry Jackson's premises), a Grade I listed E-plan manor designed by John Thorpe in the early 1590s.

The case was made for A.W.H Meredith of Condover; his name can be found engraved on the brass cartouche on the case lid. Alfred Meredith, who can be found on census records at Condover, was agent to Reginald Cholmondeley, the owner of Condover Hall at the time. Meredith, born in 1839, died aged 44 in 1883 and was buried in the village of Uppington. This also helps to confirm the provenance by date.

Date: circa 1865 - 1870

Condition: Good condition. The leather case is in quite good antique condition with genuine antique colour and delightful patina. Internally the middle lifting strap has wear but is still functional and the lining is original but has wear in places. The left hand side securing tab for the strap has been replaced. The key is present. The back left corner of the lid would benefit from a stitching repair.
