His early work in Australia is quite detailed with almost premitive feeling, aboriginals play a major role in Carse's Work, invariably being treated sympathetically

His work of final years was repetitive and quality was not as good as early one

from 1870s he often worked on cigar-box lids which cost virtually nothing and Ideally suited to his close studies of the bush

by Mid 1880, he work had become freer and often worked in the Plein-air manner while on Painting trip, many works done in the 1880s are on paper which absorbed the thinly applied oil painting to give a dry effect most suited to depicting the Australian Landscape

His large and more finished works on canvas were Completed in his studio in Sydney, Romantic Vistas in the brownish manner of scottish landscape

His best pictures are comparable with Von Guerard's
