Safavid Style Miniature Paintings, Qajar Dynasty Persia

Striking Qajar-era Persian Miniature Painting from 19th Century, in Safavid style. Persia: NP, ND. Original Artwork. Part of a collection of twenty-one Qajar-era 19th century Persian miniatures executed in the Safavid painting tradition. These painting were made to be kept in an album called “Muraqqa”. The album was extremely popular among collectors in the Islamic world, and by the end of the 16th century became the predominant format for miniature painting in the Persian Safavid, Mughal and Ottoman empires. The Muraqqa largely replaced the full-scale illustrated classic manuscripts of Persian poetry, which had been the typical vehicle for the finest miniature painters up to that time. The gold illuminated accents, facial features, Chinese inspired rolling clouds and the use of color papers are all indications of the Safavid painting tradition. Moderate and sporadic rubbing and age-toning along the border and edges (not affecting the image). Miniatures in overall good condition. Loose-leaf.

Medium: Ink, un usual simple drawing without extra colors, and gold on paper laid down on handmade cardboard
