TRIVET or Decorative Wall Hanging

"BLUE BOAR / WHITBREAD STOUT & ALE" 

 

These are so unique!! From the Colonial Revival era after WW2, Made in post-war Japan.

Both CERAMIC tiles are set into black cast iron, looking like the old carved wooden framed signs hanging outside the Taverns or Public Houses, mostly in England and carried over to Colonial America.  Tiles are very detailed and colorful.

-- Red background with a black border, and a marvelous blue boar (wild pig) -- Blue Boar was once a pub featuring Whitbread, founded in the 1700s by Samuel Whitbread. By 1800 he had developed a steam engine brewery.  By 2000, they sold their brewery operations.

Similarly named Blue Boars today in England:

• BLUE BOAR in Chipping Norton Oxfordshire, which has been there since the 1600s and has the almost identical Boar on its sign, but Whitbread is no longer aie of choice since they are out of the brewery business
