Antique Lapis Lazuli Sculpture Chinese God Of Immortality Shouxing Mounted Art
DESCRIPTION

Vintage 20th century lapis lazuli sculpture of the Shouxing, Chinese God of Immortality. Shouxing, in Chinese mythology is one of three stellar gods known collectively as Fulushou. He was also called Nanji Laoren ("Old Man of the South Pole"). Though greatly revered as the god of longevity (shou), Shouxing has no temples but is often found in the homes of older people in figure form such as this one.

The most venerable member of the Fulushou, his name means 'Star Of Long Life'. He is old, bald, and always carries a Golden Peach of Immortality from Xiwangmu's Holy Peach Garden, found only in Heaven and ripen once every three thousand years.

Ironically he didn't actually get to eat one. His long life came about by quite different means. Once he was a young and sickly lad named Zhao-Yen, who was destined to die when he reached 19. Told by a fortune-teller to enter a certain field with food and wine, he came upon two men playing checkers.

Having been warned to keep his mouth shut, he silently offered them spring rolls and wine, which were gratefully accepted. So grateful in fact, that the men revealing themselves to be the Gods of Birth and Death, offered him longevity.

First they took his allotted lifespan of 19 years and reversed it, giving him 91 years. After another spring roll and another sip of wine they decided he deserved immortality.

This would be a great addition to any lapis lazuli , classical sculpture or Chinese collection for a desk or a library.

A great addition to your antique home decor or the perfect housewarming gift idea.
