Jacob Henricus Maris (1837-1899) Dutch, 'On the Maas' 19th Century Fine Signed Antique Oil Painting

An wonderfully atmospheric fine oil on canvas depicting moored fishing boats at a quay with a town and church beyond.

Beautifully presented and painted with the typical soft hazy lighting at which Maris excelled.

In the foreground a group of vessels drift lazily on the water, the artist's brushstrokes capture the essence of the scene, the rippling water around the boats conveying both movement and tranquility.

Study also if you will, the skillfully rendered sky with scudding cloud hinted at rather than clearly defined.

Overall, a wonderful painting by Maris which invites the viewer to linger in the quiet, contemplative riverside moment.

Signed lower left, 'Jacob Maris'.  With 'SS913' chalk mark verso.

The image dimensions are approximately: 17 1/4'' x 21''   (44cm x 53cm). 

Beautifully painted and in excellent condition. Recently cleaned by our fine art conservators here in Norfolk.

Housed in a wooden gilt frame, ready to hang.
