Divco Farm Dairy Cow, Rhode Island
Art print of a group of Divco delivery trucks on a local dairy from a watercolor painting by William B. MacGregor Jr. known in the New England area as the junkyard artist
Divco
was
a brand name of delivery
trucks
built
and marketed in the United States. Divco was
well
known for its multi-stop
delivery trucks particularly
for
home delivery vehicles by dairy
farms.
Divco
(Detroit Industrial Vehicle Company) was founded by George Bacon
in 1926 when he left Detroit Electrical Vehicle Company because
his boss would not entertain the idea of using a gasoline engine
in its delivery vehicles for better range
The company was founded in 1926 with various models
including the
Model S thru the 1930’s. In 1937, the Divco truck was
redesigned with a welded
all-steel van body and a snub-nosed hood. The early models were
not refrigerated, with perishable loads such as milk crates loaded
and then covered with ice causing
the trucks prone to rust from the inside out. The
majority of Divco trucks allowed the driver to stand while driving
because the throttle
and brake were
mounted
on the steering column.
Divco
trucks were
manufactured with minimal
changes
up to the end of the line in 1986. How many remember running into a Divco truck to grab some ice while the driver was delivering milk to our home ? |

William. B. MacGregor Jr. Watercolors the Junkyard Artist
William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self-taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May,2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA
