[Simply beautiful. Very well preserved. The rear brass square stock handle is present but broken at one of the outside corners. This occurs in the rear of the coal scuttle & doesn't interfere with viewing the piece or its functioning & performance. No attempt has been made to repair or replace this piece of original brass hardware for the coal scuttle. It remains as it was found, when it was discovered in the finely appointed South Shore, Massachusetts estate it was removed from. This English made, Aesthetic Movement, mid to late 19th century, circa 1870's antique coal scuttle, is especially decorative, with its fancy top brass & turned mahogany wooden handle, as well as the raised, bas-relief center medallion on the scuttle's hinged front, sloped door. The pressed brass plate only has a very slight push on the interior seed portion of the blooming sunflower. This is present but is barely noticeable. During the Aesthetic Movement, beauty was the primary concern, dictating design & was clearly emphasized, at the expense of other aesthetic concerns. 135 to 150 years old. Very handsome.]
