This is a wonderful antique Dutch needlework sampler, made in the province of North Holland, probably on the island of Marken, now connected to the Dutch mainland with a dyke.

It shows whitework borders, peacocks, flower vases, crowns and letters.

It is stitched on linen cloth with multi-colored silk thread and  what seems to me to be white linen thread.

The sampler is not dated, many of this type of sampler were not dated. It very probably dates from the 18th century.

Many of this type of samplers were also never finished. The main reason for making these samplers was to practice needlework techniques, not to make something pretty.

It measures approximately 18 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches or 46.5 x 47 cm.

The needlework is in good condition. The cloth is a bit dirty in some places. The sampler was folded for a certain period of time.
