βŒ› HISTORY OF AUBUSSON RUGS:
Aubusson Carpets, exquisite woven masterpieces from 15th to 19th-century France, were intricately crafted with the collaboration of architects and artists from the French royal court. Originally pileless, featuring a floral medallion in pastel hues, these carpets are now woven in India and China, incorporating a pile.

Initially renowned as a tapestry-weaving hub, the Aubusson area transitioned to carpet production in the early 1740s to meet the escalating demand for knotted carpets. Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour were early patrons, ordering copies of Turkish designs through agents in Paris.

Despite the initial popularity of oriental rugs, the demand waned. In 1750, artist Pierre-JosΓ© Perrot, known for Savonnerie carpets, was commissioned to design carpets in the French style. Le Lorrain introduced a radical "grande mosaic" design, a sophisticated precursor to 19th-century floral carpets, featuring a central medallion surrounded by delicate rosettes, flowers, and garlands.

Originally crafted as both knotted-pile and flatwoven slit-tapestry technique carpets, contemporary Aubussons are typically flatweaves. The floral tradition persisted, though the trend shifted towards the neo-classical Empire style after the Proclamation of the French Empire in 1804. Architects Percier and Fontaine influenced elegant Savonnerie and Aubusson carpets, incorporating patterns inspired by classical trophies, Etruscan, and Roman motifs, characterized by a dark, rich palette and sometimes different shades of the same color, resulting in a multi-dimensional look.

Nineteenth-century Aubusson tapestry-woven carpets, produced in abundance, are favored by modern interior decorators, featuring trailing ribbons, bows, and soft pastel-hued roses. Seventeenth and eighteenth-century Aubusson carpets in good condition are rare and command a high price in today's market.
