From the cover: “The Ju 88 was designed to an official specification for a Schnellbomber (fast bomber). In common with many German aircraft of that era it was also insisted that it perform a dive-bombing function‚ but in the early years of war it was most used in its prime role of level bombing.

In its first major engagement — the Battle of Britain — the Ju 88 suffered‚ along with all other German bombers‚ from a lack of armament — a fault not of the aircraft’s design‚ but of the original specification. After 1940 however‚ and in different theatres of conflict‚ the type more than proved itself. Whether serving as a bomber‚ torpedo-bomber‚ or in the reconnaissance or fighter roles‚ the Ju 88 regularly showed its value to the ever more hard-pressed Luftwaffe.
