Robert Goebel (1923-2011), a native of Racine, WI, joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 at the age of nineteen. He received his flight training in Texas, and by the spring of 1944 was on his way to Italy with the 31st Fighter Group, which had just transitioned to the new P-51 Mustang. After 61 combat missions he was credited with 11 victories, earning him the coveted status of “double ace.” When he returned home in September 1944 he was not yet 22 years old.
This signed photo is a copy of an actual period photo. The signature is real and was most likely signed in the 1970s.
