A RARE ORIGINAL Hand colored copper plate engraving, from "American Ornithology; Or The Natural History Of The Birds Of The United States". One of 76 Hand Colored engravings by Alexander Lawson, J. G. Warnicke, G. Murray and Benjamin Tanner, from original drawings by Alexander Wilson, Issued in 1828-29.
The work  pre-dates Audubon's famous Elephant Folio by some years and is the fist American Bird Book with color plates, published in America.
These engravings are of considerable historical importance even though over shadowed by the work of John James Audubon who, it is believed met Alexander Wilson and who may have gotten the idea for his work from observing Wilson's.
Wilson emigrated from Scotland to America in 1794 and upon seeing birds in America that he thought so much more colorful than the ones in his native Scotland, he took an interest in studying the birds in America. His intention was to draw all of the birds in this country. Traveling mostly by foot he made many journeys in order to draw and record every species.
